When he got there her doctor and the nurses were trying to talk her out of the name she had chosen for her baby. She had gotten a peek at her chart and saw a name there that she thought was beautiful and unusual. She named her child Chlamydia. I am all for unique names. But I think you have to consider what is going to happen to your child later in life because of the name.

What is a ghetto conversion for the name "Brenda"?
This is a silly question, but the person who says a name I like gets Best Answer.
What is a name that would make the name "Brenda" sound "ghetto"? For example, if you take the name Tim - turns into Timeeka using the base of the name.
Thanks!
(NOTE: This is just for fun - I'm not naming any babies this =])

Does the name Janayla sound ghetto?
I am naming her after my grandma Janie and my mom Thelma. Everytime I tell people what her name is going to be, they give me THAT look. What do you think?
Does the name Janayla sound ghetto?
Well I believe in naming a child after elders in our family. I have 3 daughters the first is Delisha the second is Brittany and my moms name is Thelma and my name is Tiffany so naturally I gave up on names and named my third child Stephanie Debresha Thelma and I don't think of it as ghetto because there is nothing ghetto about any of us. But alls to say the choice is all yours congrats too you
Reply:I see no "thelma" in that name. The there is an "A" and an "L" in both names, but otherwise there is no link.
I think the name will be confusing. You could maybe edit it a little? Remember you can use the middle name, too!
Reply:i think first of all its your baby so you can name it whatever you want. second of all, that name is so cute, and it has more style than like mary or some joe blow name
Reply:It does sound kind of ghetto, but if it's what you want, go for it.
You might want to consider giving her that for her middle name, or taking letters from both names to create a new one (such as Amie).
You do get points for creativity, by the way. Congratulations on the new addition, and best of luck!
Reply:I know you said you dont like Jane but maybe you should reconsider it. It is such a classic. Names like that never go out of style. What about changing it to Janelle? (like Ja-nell) Good luck.
Reply:How about Jinaya or Jimaya. Janayla does sound sort of ghetto just think when she grows up.
Reply:Yes, it sounds ghetto. Why not just name her Janie Thelma or Thelma Jane?
Reply:Oh Yeah...WAY too ghetto! Gross
Reply:no!! its sounds perfectly cute and unique thats the beauty of it!
Reply:It doesn't sound ghetto but it is unique.
Reply:It doesnt sound ghetto to me at all %26amp;i'm white.to me that is as beautiful as some poetry I've read. hope this helps you

how about: Jayla?

Reply:OK, I don't want to sound mean, but I think it does sound a little ghetto. What if you gave your daughter a first name all of her own and a middle name that combines the 2, she'll still have the unique name honoring Janie and Thelma but in her middle name and not as her first...

Why not give her two wonderful names, not one combined name. Like Thelma Jane, or Janice Therese (using the first letters but not the real names. Those are classic names, they have a simplicity and elegance to them that a made-up name can never match.
I think the combined name thing is a trend that will not last, and a name is for a lifetime.
Good Luck.

also if you are secound guessing yourself
maybe make that the middle name

Why not use...Why not pick a name that you actually like that begins with the letter J and a middle name that is a name that you like that begins with the letter T instead of creating a name!
Reply:I don't like Janayla. sorry.
how about:
Jema - J from Janie and ma from Thelma
Jana - Jan from Janie and a from Thelma
Jilla - Ji from Janie and la from Thelma

Diovion? Should I have spelled it differently? It's pronounced Dee-ah-vee-ohn.

Not "ghetto", it's worse, it's gawd-awful.

Anything but a baggage heavy "ghetto" name. Do you want your child to succeed in life? Live a good solid upwardly mobile life? Give him/her a name associated with the good, solid American middle class.
Do not stick your kid with a name that sounds like a gangbanger from South Central LA or some low income apartment complex in Federal Way, WA.

Dreadful idea to actually give anyone this name. I'd pronounce that as something like 'DEE-O-VEE-ON', but it's anybody's guess how other people might say it.
You've got thousands of years of human history and the richness of many cultures to choose from. Please try and use that instead of creating a name that sounded like it was randomly generated by a computer program!
Reply:I know a woman named Davonne, and she pronounces it Day-von.

When you give your child a ghetto name are you being selfish?
Definately!!!!! Oh my god my ex best friend did this to FOUR helpless children....
When they grow up they would have a hard time getting anyone to take them seriously.....
Would you trust Dr. Debo Malik Tyriq to treat you!?! I don't think so!!!!!!
When you give your child a ghetto name are you being selfish?
I think what you consider "ghetto" other people consider creative.
When it comes to society and acceptance, the majority is not always correct, so if some chooses to judge a child by their name rather than their character, that speaks to that persons ignorance and not the "selfishness" of the child's parents.
Reply:No, not selfish, but LAZY. You should be able to tell your child the origin of his her name one day, and sounding like your favorite drink or car is not a good story.
Also, taking any everyday word and slapping AVION or ARIOUS at the end and LA, SH, TA or DE at the beginning doesn't count for originality.
Reply:I don't think so it all, you know white, latino and black ghetto placess with the name such as......................................... be for us sound ghetto, but it's parents choice name a child certain name. In my opinion, at school nobody should make fun of a child because of the name.
You know Arabic, Chinese, Indian and African names for our society sounds so funny, but nobody should make fun of their names because in their culture their names doesn't sound funny, but in opposite honourable.
So think about it and take your point of view on this subject because as you may hear Arab, Chines and Indian names sound really funny, but nobody makes fun of them.
Reply:Well ghetto name may not be the right terminology, but yeah i get what you mean
And yeah, either selfish or oblivious to the fact that the kid will be teased to death about the name. Unless of course his/her peers have equally "ghetto" names.
Reply:It isn't necessarily a "racist" or race based thing. Whites doe this too. Making up stupid names just to be different is not unique to black folks for anybody who thinks so.
"Hillbilly chic" can get pretty out of control too.
But yeah it is stupid and selfish as all hell.
Reply:This is a hard one! Yes and No! The name just might be cute to the mom! but none of us had a choice of our names at birth! Now days you cant tell if the name is ghetto or proper!! Meaning what race it is!!
Reply:Yes, have you considered how it will sound on a job application? A name is for life, unless the person as an adult can afford the legal process of a name change.
Reply:what do you mean by ghetto names, you mean like antitiknikqua or something like that? I thinks its embarrassing to name your child a name like that.

What country was responsible for this move to allow Jews to have last names, and in what era? And how was the charges for the various names determined other than those reflecting the trade of these people. Was Goldsmith, a double name, more expensive than Gold or Silverman or blacksmith and why? What were the rules surrounding this name change/addition policy?

Reply:Don't bother going to the above links, they're 'Hate sites' the poster is obviously a Nazi. So far she has only been interested in questions concerning Jews [see her profile] and her only dubious contribution on all, is to post the same old hate sites. She has no mind of her own!

Do you consider the name "Darian" to be a ghetto name?
Just wondering...
Do you consider the name "Darian" to be a ghetto name?
No Darian is a nice name and can be used for either a boy or a girl. A ghetto name is something that is usually made up by a young mother. They take a regular name and add something extra like Ty, La, Ja, or My in order to be different. Ghetto names also have extra punctuation for no reason. For example, if you were a teacher or employer and saw the following names La'Darian, Ty-Dari'an, or Jadarian, you would expect the student or applicant to be ghetto friendly.
Reply:No. It's not ghetto. Darien/Darian is a very nice name. It reminds me of Sailor Moon's guy, but aside from the anime/manga association, it's a decent choice for a little boy.
Reply:Darian is a very nice name. Don't get too caught up in the idea of a "ghetto" name. If you like the name, feel free to use it.
Reply:No. I like it. Ghetto is just someone elses categorization.

(I find Lydia and Sylvia to be nice names, personally. If you want something classy, research names that are far as possible from the top of baby names used. The further they are at the bottom means the older the name is and the less likely there will be twenty of them in one class. I believe http://www.babynames.com does a ranking list.)

Whats your name and if you could what would you change it to,also whats the the ugliest/most ghetto name u've
heard?
Whats your name and if you could what would you change it to,also whats the the ugliest/most ghetto name u've
Roy. I'd probably change it to Roger if I could. The ugliest most ghetto name for a guy would be DaJuan, but for a girl it would be Shaquilliya.
Reply:My name's Lisa. Never thought about what I would rather be called, something less common, for sure!
Worst name I ever heard was the woman in the room next to me at the hospital when I had my oldest. She named her baby Urea Crystal. Ick.
Reply:My name is Leona (it's french and pronounced Lay-o-na) My mother named me after my grandfather Leo (Lay-o). I wouldn't change it. It means a lioness and a strong woman. I am. The ugliest name is something that just doesn't fit the person and sounds like a dead end instead of something of beauty and life.
Reply:My name is Shoshana. I wouldn't change it, I really like it. It's Hebrew for "Rose of Sharon".
Ugliest name I've heard... Supposedly a couple in china named their baby "Saddaam Sars" because of the trend to name after current events. That's gotta be one teased kid... named after a hated dictator and a killer virus! Read it in the news.

What is meant by a 'ghetto' name?
I just saw someone saying that Keisha is a ghetto name... I'm not entirely sure what is meant by that.
Any examples of 'ghetto' names?
What is meant by a 'ghetto' name?
Ghetto would be any name that sounds uneducated or made up, or randomly thrown together.
basic rule of thumbs is that if it sounds like a noise you'd make whilst birthing your child, it's ghetto.
I personally don't think Keisha is ghetto. Nor do i think only African Americans use "ghetto names".
examples-
Uniqua
Shauntay
Chandeelier
RaSheequa
D' Monique
Rowshunda
T'Arah
etc.
btw-spell check dang near exploded from all those. oh, and yes those are real names that i've heard around here...scary huh? and only 2 of those names are of African American children, the rest are white.
Reply:A ghetto name, to me, is a name that would be found in the African-American community. Please, do not take this the wrong way, but for some African-American parents, the names they choose often shock the rest of us. However, after reading posts on YA asking about baby names, some of those "ghetto" names make more sense to me than other names that people have picked out.
Keisha, for instance, is a name that when you hear it, you immediately think of an adorable little black child, not a white one. A name like Kaitlyn, on the other hand, would be considered a "white" name, but I am sure that there are many black Kaitlyns just like there are probably a few white Keishas. A ghetto name to is usually one with a "De" in front of it for boys and the slew of "ishas" for girls.
This is how I interpret it. I would love to see how other people answer this question.
Reply:Considering a person's name as being "ghetto'' is pure racism ! A ghetto is a place that is created by economic and social inequalities, that force certain people to live in a confined area. The term was most pointedly used when the Nazi's confined the Jewish people to certain neighborhoods in an effort to control them. In Amerika, the banks used "red lining' as a way to keep blacks confined to the older, decaying areas of cities. So don't be sucked in to the racism here in Amerika. Ghettos don't create names ! Only racism creates ghettos !
Reply:Somebody stating that Keisha is a "ghetto" name is truly showing their ignorance and immaturity. I believe I understand what they mean by "ghetto" name, they are referencing more than likely to ethnic populations and communities and this is completely stereotypical. Along the same lines, to bring a little clarification, someone would state that "Cody" or "Wayne" or "Charlie", might be "redneck" or "country"...If you like the name Keisha, don't let someone else or their opinion change your mind.
Reply:Let me clarify to you that Ghetto is a place not an adjective. I really do not like when people throw that term around loosely. They are names that are more commonly used by blacks but are not "tradional" enough for white standards. There is a different between an ethnic name and a ghetto name. When someone calls a name ghetto, they are saying that it sounds ridiculous...

u never know. they may feel they need to "live up" to their name.. or it may just embarrass them.
Does giving a kid a ghetto name increase his chances of being a thug?
It depends on where you live and bring him up. A kid will gravitate to the strongest influences around him. Lots of thugs, he may become one. Lots of trades people he may become a craftsman. Guide him the best you can.

Just remember having an odd name will bring on a lot of teasing growing up, but they will appreciate it later. My name is Jessamy pronounced like sesame only with a J. =) I get tons of compliments. Another thing you can try is mixing up initials. My mothers were D.A. and so my daughters middle name is DeAy. =)

Am I the only one whose sick of cliche/trendy, ghetto trash and hippie names?
I know I'm alone on this website (I think?) but I like classic pretty feminine or as you call "old-fashioned names". I personally prefer names like Ella, Lucy, Lena, Susie, Sara and Betty as opposed to names like Madison, Taylor, Skye, Rainbow, Brooklyn, Laquasha and Dakota. AND HOW MANY MORE ASHLEYS AND BRITNEYS DO WE NEED!!!??? How dare people make fun of my taste in names just because they're not in a certain random list of 10 names that everyones using right now and if anyone dare name their kid a name they pick because it they actually like the name and not because everyone else is naming their kid that. It's not like it's Moon Unit or Taekwon. Keep in mind that no names are really "old-fashioned" , they're immortal because names are cyclical. Someday Ella and Betty will be in style again and Ashley and Britney will be made fun of.
Also what's up with all these stupid "new age" spellings like Aleesha, Jahsmyne, Teenah, and Traycee? Yeesh!
Am I the only one whose sick of cliche/trendy, ghetto trash and hippie names?
sounds like somebody's got some issues with somebody lol...yeah i agree to a point ...your names are just as vaild as any other "new" or "hip" name out there, but doesnt mean you can go and bash other just because somebody or the websites are bashing your good names.
my name is brittiny and i hate it too many of us lol...but its spelt differntly though...but i understand where your coming from too.
Reply:oh thank god! i thought m the only one.. spot on for those new age names.. what r those anyway?? i think it happens everywhere.. even here in asia.. but then again.. people have their own opinion.. so i guess we just have to live w/ it..
p/s : my real name is nuthin new age..nor cliche ;)
Reply:I think any name is OK , as long as it doesn't make life diffucult for a child.
Note: The car Mercedes was named after Benz's daughter Mercedes, so Mercedes really is a name!
Reply:Nope, my husband's cousin named her baby girl Nevaeh (heaven spelled backwards). Which I guess is another trendy thing to do. Of course, I have no clue how to pronounce the child's name, nor will her teachers in school in a few years, I imagine.
Personally, I think getting "creative" with a child's name is cruel. A name is a very precious thing, you sure don't want to set your child up for a lifetime of either having to constantly spell their name, or pronounce it for others, or being ridiculed for it.
Reply:Some of the new names are nice but i prefer old fashion names myself. I think it will make it easier in life (especially career wise) if you have a name that everyone can pronounce with a straight spelling.
Reply:After all of that I hope that you feel much better to have gotten that off your mind.
Reply:i m with you i like biblical names best
Reply:I'm against people naming there kids after places and cars so Brooklyn and Mercedes and stuff like that that is ignorant

Is this name ghetto for a girl?
I like the name "Music"
My friend said it was ghetto
I think it's beautiful
What do ya'll think?
Is this name ghetto for a girl?
Aria means song or music in italian. Music just sounds creepy. Aria is close but you don't call her music. Aria Music would be okay. Actually, I really like that. Aria Music. Aria means Music and if you still want Music it can be a middle name!
Hope I helped!
Reply:I don't understand why it would be considered "Ghetto". If your friend doesn't like it then he or she should just say that. I don't think you guys understand the meaning of the word "Ghetto", it's a little offensive. The name Music is unique for sure, and if you like it go with your heart. If it has meaning to you then that is the name you should choose, besides all the celebs have cool and unique names now in days, it's all about being different ex: Apple, Madex, Beautiful, Shiloh, etc...
Reply:I don't think Music is good, it is ghetto, and it's not a name and will get confused with the real thing.
Melody, Claire (clarinet), Kira (Kirari, in Japanese it means star), Aria (Italian, beautiful type of song that is extremely difficult to get right), Chloe (music).
Reply:Maybe spell it Mueseek (mu zeek); but I like it spelled the correct way.
Its quite different! But if people can name their children River, Raine, Sky, Stormy, Sunny, Brooke, Nevaeh, Noel, Star, etc, etc, etc.
I see no harm in allowing your baby to be the first to have the name.
Reply:I think it is cute, but not for a child. You have to put in consideration that this child is a human and not a musical note. Your child would have a tough childhood. What about a name like Music, or maybe think of why you like the name, because of the beginning? What about Malachy? Or just the theme?
Reply:i dont know if its ghetto but i wouldnt like that to be my name !? her nickname would be moo!
maybe try melody , harmony as suggested or maybe a singers name i:e Sade ( sharday) lily etc for what kind of music the baby likes to listen to in the womb?
Reply:i think it's kinda cute.who wants 2 name there kid a name that a thousand other people have?lol.i going 2 name my little girl aliana janelle. and i don't care how ghetto anyone thinks it is.u are the one carrying that baby so it's ur choice no matter what anyone says a/b it.congrats on da baby!
Reply:Yes, it is kind of ghetto. If you like music so much, then you could name her Harmony, Melody, Lyric, Viola, or something along those lines.
Reply:It sounds kinda like a stripper name to be honest with you. (Don't worry my mom named me after a Hawaiian hooker) You could stick with Music but try some alterations. Like in different languages. Musique would be French.
Reply:I think it's a little bit out there. I would say it's ghetto, yes.
What about :
Lyric
Harmony
Melodie
? But, if it's what you like, then nobody can stop you !
Reply:ghetto? ... no but cute? ... not really imagine that child being an adult going for job interviews and being called on a PA system....embarrassing? or intriguing?
Reply:It is a little to original for me I like some of the other names that the others have suggested:
Aria, Melody, Candence.
Reply:If "ghetto" means completely horrible, and something a child would be sorry for every day....
Reply:Ghetto, try harmony or melody or something less "original"
Reply:Ghetto, sorry but what about names like Nicole, Kim, Charlotte, Stacy... Something like that?
Reply:i lov eit i think it is beautiful it is unique and pretty
Reply:Ghetto. You would never find a doctor, lawyer, etc with a name like that. Pick something more sophisticated.
Reply:I don't think its ghetto but it is definitely lower-class.
Reply:Ghetto.
Reply:I don't know if it's ghetto so much as out there and weird... How about Melody or Harmony or Cadence if you like music.

Reply:its very different. I haven't heard that as a name before, i like it, its very different :)
Reply:PLEASE dont name your child that! What did she ever do to you? Unless you want 'music' to get teased..dont name her that!
Reply:I don't think music makes a good name, sorry.
Reply:I think it is a bit ghetto.
Reply:I don't know if it's ghetto, but I think the poor kid will get made fun of. What about Harmony?

How do you dress ghetto without all the name brand stuff?
how do you look more like 'ghetto/hardcore don't mess with me i'm straight out the hood' type?
not like 'hay i wear south pole and ecko i am kewlsssz' type.
you know?
hahahahaha. stupid question but i want to know.
How do you dress ghetto without all the name brand stuff?
Exactly what is looking "ghetto?" Not looking like office managers, lawyers, or sheltered people stuck in their suburbs? Is it urban? I mean, who even said wearing name brand clothing is "ghetto?" Do you mean Hip-Hop apparel?
Reply:hahhahahahhahah this made my day why would you want to look like that

Are Low Class White ppl, GHetto ppl, and Hispanics giving their kids a disadvantage by naming them those names?
Names like Beth, Mandee.Apple River
Jose, hector, Fernando
Shaniqua, LaRhonda, and such?
Are Low Class White ppl, GHetto ppl, and Hispanics giving their kids a disadvantage by naming them those names?
I think it gives people more of an 'opportunity' to stereotype them before they even meet them.
It's sad that that is what the world is about, but it's true.
Reply:I don't think a child's name depends on the parents' situation. Obviously, it's more likely to meet a Spanish Fernando than a black or white, but it means they're honoring their origin, and in Spain, it's a pretty common name /if I know well/, so I wouldn't say it's disadvantaging.
I don't think a child's future depends on his/her name, and sorry, but your question is a but racist. What's more, as you can see /celebrity baby names/, the rich also try to come up with uncommon names
Reply:On one hand, these names do carry some stereotypes. And some people might see these stereotypes.
But for the most part, I'd say it's the fact that this children are growing up low class or "ghetto" or a minority that is more keeping them down. In the end, if you are educated and do a good job you will probably succeed. But, chances are, if you are low class you probably will not be able to afford education. Which will probably be the greatest hindrance.
*side note* I don't see Beth as a hindrance. I think she's a pretty widespread name. Now Cindy-Beth might seem a bit low class. Also Apple and River are the opposite of low class to me. They are middle class hipsters. Just personal opinion.
Reply:There was something about this topic on the Tyra Banks show not too long ago.
I don't think its necessarily a disadvantage, but it does lead people to assume things that may or may not be true based on stereotypes.
And as to the comment of white people not naming their children, Shaniqua or Jose..... I guess it just goes back to the fact that its the parents that make the ultimate decision. I know two little boys, one named Caleb, the other is Tyson. One is white the other is black. One might assume Tyson is black and Caleb is white, but its the exact opposite.
Reply:I don't know about Hispanic people, but I agree about low-class names. There's no doubt that in job applications a Catherine would be selected over a Baylynnleighe, or an Elizabeth over an Alyzybyth. You don't need to give your child a popular or common name, but by misspelling or making up names you are putting your child at a disadvantage.
Reply:being mandy myself i have had no problems in my life because of that. and i dont think people should be vindicted through a name or race. why do we do that low class middle class high class its ridiculas. we are all equal in life regardless of money, race,or name.if i wanted to call my child lilly-poppy-seed i will and if she wanted to change that when she is older she could. look a river phoenix for example his name got him to hollywood.
Reply:I think Shaniqua, Chaquita, and LaToya are a bit much , but the other names seem somewhat normal to me... not that i would ever name my child that.
I guess i don't see how Beth and Mandy are Low Class, old school maybe, but low class. I'm confused?
Reply:they may not be doing them any favors, but if Brack Hussein Obama can be elected president anything is possible
Beth? my sister's name is Beth and she's not any of those stereotypical descriptions!
Reply:Names like these do give SOME people the opportunity to stereotype however it shouldn't be that way. A name has nothing to do with a persons character
Reply:I have never heard of any white people naming there kids shaniqua jose or larhonda lol why would they?
Reply:statistically yes
