Parents who give their children "ghetto" baby names? Why?

Initially posted in the wrong section ...

I went to school with a girl named Quanetta. When I was in elementary school there were twin girls named Georgetta and Rosetta. I know of someone with the name of Daquantay. I hate those names! Why do people do this to their children? I realize that it is their child but some of these names are ridiculous. People, stop combining your first name, your mom's middle name and your baby's daddy or husband's last name all together to come up with names like Treylishanique!

Parents who give their children "ghetto" baby names? Why?
A lot of these women are just immature, teenage girls, and they are trying to give their kids "unique" names; they aren't really thinking about it any deeper than that. The fact that they live in the ghetto/projects with plenty of other kids with those kinds of names reinforces the rightness of doing so.

Also, as the names sound vaguely "african," it makes them feel like they are blending African culture into America. I'm sure that a lot of resumes end up in the garbage with those kinds of names on them.
Reply:i agree, all their are doing is instilling the ghetto culture into them so young that when they grow up they end up selling drugs, doing gang activity and are in and out of jail so much they become instatutionalized they don't usually become a productive person in society and it all starts with a name!
Reply:Oh God! I agreeeeeeeeeee! It sounds like people just made these names up while on serious painkillers.

Girls on my block- "Quantay, Trasheeka, Lafika, Darshelle" and the boys, "Jameronay and Anfernee" - ugh i hate them.
Reply:Aren't those names usually african american origin names? Like Taneshia, Marquita...?? Or are they just made up?

I'm just talking origin.. not necessarily associated with the race.. like some names are Irish, German, etc.. Yes, some are made up, but some are actual african origin names, no?
Reply:parents give there kids ghetto names because the parents are ghetto. and i think some of those "ghetto" names are kinda pretty
Reply:Maybe to whom is naming the child those names are appealing and they like them and don't see the flaws in the name. People do have different opinions on names.
Reply:The ones I hate the worst are the ones like Shon'Darius, Chi'Kameneka, Izaia'Daminien. Those poor kids (who are all 2-4 years old) won't be able to spell their names until about 5th grade.
Reply:I hear you, but some people just can't let go of family and cultural traditions no matter how silly they are.
Reply:My old best friend from my youth gave birth reacently aged 17 and shes called her son Kenton

Which makes me glad she didn't have a girl cause she said she would have named it "Shazza"
Reply:I don't know about every one but I plan to give my kids ghetto names. I like ghetto name because they are unique. My name, Miranda, I think is a white name and I hate it since I'm black. I have never met a black girl named Miranda, only white. So because I don't have a ghetto name, so I would like to give my kids a ghetto and/or unique name.
Reply:Lol... I totally agree with you! Shaniqua and Quanetta are just horrible names to brand a child with. To me, they sound like really big women or something. It gives children completely the wrong image!
Reply:It's either that, or bastardized Irish names. Every other boy is named Ayyydyyyn or Braedin or Jaiden or Zaydyn or Kaiyedeyin. It's ridiculous.

And then you've got all these girls with boys' names -- Madison, Addison, Tyler, Reese. Why do some parents act like they're naming a Chia pet instead of a real human being?
Reply:it is not a race thing my stepson is white and he was not raised in the ghetto and did not go to the ghetto and he named his two kids roelissa and sherryaa. and he calls himself being different me being grandma have nicknames of course i cannot even pronounce.so i also would like to know why they do this?
Reply:hmm, mine would be sumika -- ha ha ha. i've actually heard a reason from someone with one of these names: "it's so the collection callers won't find you."
Reply:Ha! I worked with an african-american woman whose daughter was named Heather, also..... and I worked with a white woman whose last name was Murphy, and had named her daughter Cherise.... not that I think names are "black" or "white", but I only knew of people of the opposite race with those respective names up until then.
Reply:The people whom are doing this is not thinking with their right mind. They need to know that employer's in their kids future will look at their name and may not get hired on a job because of this .They don't obviously know it will hurt them instead of helping them. But their are adults that are not responsible for themselves, let alone their children or child. Some think it is cute,NOT! Even now with long fingernails, tattoos, weird hairstyle's and different colors hairstyles are hurting not only them, but inspections of their job. That's why policies on jobs has changed because of this and they cannot file a lawsuit because of this.So they need to take heed of naming these kids this way.But the first thing they will say is I'M GROWN!!! But being grown means to be responsible for your actions. They wonder why they have to live off the GOVERNMENT or sell drugs, because most don't care.I'm proud of what I have named my kids ,because they don't have too rely on the GOVERMENT or sell drugs to live by.They are even naming their animals (those who have one) like that.Shame on these GROWN FOLKS.I hope they learn sooner than later. And they wonder why they get low paying jobs if they get one.WISE UP GROWN FOLKS!!!!!!!!!After they get jobs, some change their appearance any way and wonder why people are talking about them. They don't know the GOVERMENT is part of the changes of employee's policies, especially the one's who are working around children.
Reply:I think some name their children that because they don't know any other life outside of the ghetto - plain ignorance and it's well, my friend's baby's name is moesha, shaquanda, Moet, Alize, etc etc etc.. Other people identify those names with being Black.

White people do the same thing too in order to be "different". I don't know how many "Ryan, Evan, Emily, or Dakotas" I've heard some movie star name their children. Or who go to school with my children. Demi Moore and Bruce Willis assassinated thier daughters by naming them Rumer, Tallulah Belle and Scout (WHO does that?!?) Weird!

Aside from those instances, I think that people inherently want to (at least make an attempt to) be different and come up with something that's unique. Trouble with uniqueness is that when many people try to be unique, you get commonality.
Reply:Thank you !

I understand you're proud to be whatever nationality you are, but seriously - Ashley and Jennifer aren't just for white suburban kids !
Reply:Good Grief, I cant even pronounce half the names you guys are talking about. lol. !!!

But you're right, Ive noticed it on a lot of the American talk shows we get. Its as if someones taken a pile of alphabet blocks and thrown them up in the air and seen which way they have landed to make up a name.

Very interesting question!!
