What is meant by a 'ghetto' name?

I just saw someone saying that Keisha is a ghetto name... I'm not entirely sure what is meant by that.

Any examples of 'ghetto' names?

What is meant by a 'ghetto' name?
Ghetto would be any name that sounds uneducated or made up, or randomly thrown together.

basic rule of thumbs is that if it sounds like a noise you'd make whilst birthing your child, it's ghetto.

I personally don't think Keisha is ghetto. Nor do i think only African Americans use "ghetto names".

examples-

Uniqua

Shauntay

Chandeelier

RaSheequa

D' Monique

Rowshunda

T'Arah

etc.

btw-spell check dang near exploded from all those. oh, and yes those are real names that i've heard around here...scary huh? and only 2 of those names are of African American children, the rest are white.
Reply:A ghetto name, to me, is a name that would be found in the African-American community. Please, do not take this the wrong way, but for some African-American parents, the names they choose often shock the rest of us. However, after reading posts on YA asking about baby names, some of those "ghetto" names make more sense to me than other names that people have picked out.

Keisha, for instance, is a name that when you hear it, you immediately think of an adorable little black child, not a white one. A name like Kaitlyn, on the other hand, would be considered a "white" name, but I am sure that there are many black Kaitlyns just like there are probably a few white Keishas. A ghetto name to is usually one with a "De" in front of it for boys and the slew of "ishas" for girls.

This is how I interpret it. I would love to see how other people answer this question.
Reply:Considering a person's name as being "ghetto'' is pure racism ! A ghetto is a place that is created by economic and social inequalities, that force certain people to live in a confined area. The term was most pointedly used when the Nazi's confined the Jewish people to certain neighborhoods in an effort to control them. In Amerika, the banks used "red lining' as a way to keep blacks confined to the older, decaying areas of cities. So don't be sucked in to the racism here in Amerika. Ghettos don't create names ! Only racism creates ghettos !
Reply:Somebody stating that Keisha is a "ghetto" name is truly showing their ignorance and immaturity. I believe I understand what they mean by "ghetto" name, they are referencing more than likely to ethnic populations and communities and this is completely stereotypical. Along the same lines, to bring a little clarification, someone would state that "Cody" or "Wayne" or "Charlie", might be "redneck" or "country"...If you like the name Keisha, don't let someone else or their opinion change your mind.
Reply:Let me clarify to you that Ghetto is a place not an adjective. I really do not like when people throw that term around loosely. They are names that are more commonly used by blacks but are not "tradional" enough for white standards. There is a different between an ethnic name and a ghetto name. When someone calls a name ghetto, they are saying that it sounds ridiculous...

Ghetto names:

Shykeria

Sharlisia

Deavonte

Quontella

Names that are Ethnic but NOT Ghetto:

Kenya
Reply:A usually poor section of a city inhabited primarily by people of the same race, religion, or social background, often because of discrimination.

That is the actual definition of the word Ghetto

When it is used though, it's kind of saying it has a trashy side... best way i know to say it...
Reply:I dont think keisha is THAT ghetto, although the only keisha i know is pretty ghetto LOL.......but i would say these are some gheto names: Shanequa, Yolanda, Bonquita lol, not tryin to sound racist or anything, because I'm hispanic myself, but basically hood a** black girl names....and don't act like you don't know what I'm talking about.
Reply:ghetto name

An African-American sounding name like Shaniqua, Laquisha, Ebony, Latrelle, Malcolm, Jamal, Rashida, etc.

While many African-Americans with these names have succeeded, as long as racism] exists, people with ghetto names on their resumes will have an uphill battle.

Condoleeza is NOT a ghetto name (no matter how nasty she may scowl). Had she been named Dr. Laquisha Rice, the Bush crime family would have never even heard of her.

ghetto name

Popularized in Skee-lo's 1995 hit single "I Wish", a ghetto name is something Skee "wishes" he could give to his kids. Skee's ultimate goal is to get wit leoshi. Good luck. She's fly.

we could play ghetto games, name our kids ghetto names like lil mookie, big al, lorraine

Reply:It's a racist view of some people that Keisha is primarily a black persons name. And misconception that a large percentage of the black community lives in government housing or a slum, a.k.a. ghetto. Which now days (ghetto) just refers to ANYTHING being or looking poor and/or trashy.
Reply:Keisha is definitely not a ghetto name. We had a dog named Keisha and she was far from ghetto. I think a 'ghetto' name is one that looks like someone just took scrabble tiles, put them in a bag and picked them out in random order and thought "Hey that's what I am going to name my baby."
Reply:lol it means that, if you have a "ghetto name" your named after a person who's in the ghetto sort of speak....lol like shanaynay, keisha, shanaqway, taqesha,..people that have wierd names like that usually live in the ghetto probably, not being stereotypical...
Reply:i dont think keisha is a ghetto name. its cute! a ghetto name would be like... (no offense to anyone with this name) donquisha. i found it on a website...
Reply:A name is a name %26amp; one day, some smart alec %26amp; a racist at that, decided to label names as being "ghetto." No wonder racism is alive %26amp; well in the world. Sheesh!

**Your baby is beautiful %26amp; I mean that sincerely**
Reply:well i think they mean if you lived in a bad part of town like a sketchy area your name would be "ghetto" like keisha, lacreisha, alberneisha, kiara, sarai, many different ones but don't let that stop you pick the name you like :)
Reply:oh you know. names that people make up to torture their kids when they get to grade school.

bonifa,

shequanda,

tequilaiana....

stuff like that.

and Keisha's not ghetto, I think it's a pretty name for any girl. ghetto names are usually "out there".
Reply:Well everyone is just ignorant who refers to unique names as "ghetto"

Ghetto is a refuge camp that was placed for the jews during the holocaust under hitlers reign. People like to abuse that word.
Reply:A ghetto name is somethingg like Shamika or LaTisha. they call these Ghetto names because they are most popular in poor hoods. not sure why. more examples are Monique, Tasha, Kiki, Shawanda. stuff like that.
Reply:Its sad but a lot of people relate names like keisha, tyiesha, tanika, ect...to "black" names. Some people say they are ghetto names because most black people have those names rather than white people.
Reply:ghetto names are like african american names like shaniqua, jekwan, tanikwa, jetan, the really shavvy americans not necessarily black americans but trailer trash types
Reply:lol, ghetto is like gangsta you know what that means dont ya? and i reckon a ghetto name is dujuan
Reply:Please don't be mad:

Sheniqua, Latoya, Moeesha, Lashonda, Sharonda...
Reply:To label something "ghetto" to me is pointless. Name your child whatever you want. Keisha is a lovely name.
Reply:God knows what a 'ghetto' name is wot like a 'gangster' name theres no such thing and Keisha is not a 'ghetto' name as my niecee is called Keisha =] x
Reply:Bonquisha, Sha nay nay haha, Destiny. Keisha is similar lol and by ghetto they mean it sounds like its for a black person.
Reply:Pretty much anything with the "eesha" sound at the end of the name is ghetto.
Reply:there is no such thing as a ghetto name... a name is a name...
Reply:It's any name that is substantially more likely to belong to a stripper or prostitute than a college graduate.
Reply:Jennique, Tre'nique, Shineaqua, Roderika --basically names that people made up and are extremly hard to spell. The reason they are called "ghetto" is because most of the people who name there kids these names live in low income housing called the "ghetto"
Reply:Ashickawanika xD

Really there's no "ghetto" name, but African-Americans have different styles of naming.
Reply:Any obviously "black" name like Laquisha or Tyron or J'Sean etc. Any black name is ghetto. And yes, Keisha is ghetto.
