Condolezza- Sec of State
Shaquille (O'neal)- NBA legend
Oprah- Billionaire
Dr. Andr茅 Action Diakit茅 Jackson- Was the first billionaire in Africa (there have only been 3), but his parents are Black Americans. He is founder and architect of the entire diamond industry in Africa.
Lavaughn-Michelle Obamas middle name
Most black Americans have Anglo names but the few who have "ghetto names" have done quite well for themselves. Why do people still make fun of these names?
Why do some of he most successful black americans have "ghetto" names?
It's a blatant double standard. People want to attack black culture but ignore when blacks fully embrace their culture and succeed
Reply:You are so brain washed and very ignorant. By the way, im African straighnt from uganda. To say that there have been only three billionares in Africa proves your stupidity and ignorance. The nunmber
of African billionares has always been higher than that of African Americans. The first two richest black people in the world are from Africa. One is from South Africa and the other is from Nigeria. (Go to some more reseaerch). You are also very brain washed in thinking that all people should have white names like "Charles". Do some research and educate yourself before bashing
people's names.
Ignorant people like you upset me.
My name is kisenyi
Reply:Lol! But I actually like the name "Lavaughn"! I wanted to name my future son that! Anyways, I think names are "people labels" and I don't believe that a name can define how a person makes an impact in life and how they live life by what they do. The people who make fun of these names are so way behind in life it's ridiculous. I don't consider names to be "ghetto" because I realize that a ghetto is a place (that started and has strong origins in Europe) and not a state of mind. However, I think it would be embarrassing to have an Anglo name like "Gertrude" or something like that.
Reply:Why do some of he most successful black americans have "ghetto" names
I guess for the same reason people like
Bill
Warren
Steve
Paul
Ted
are so successful. Hard work and determination is what creates successful people not government handouts and guilty white liberal do-gooders seeing all black people as poor little victims who need their help and entitlements.
Reply:ha ha ha.....i don't even know where to start.
i heard oprah's name was actually to be orpha, but her parents either misspelled it or someone typed up the birth certificate wrong. orpha is biblical.
it's just chanelle states...
"The people who make fun of these names are so way behind in life it's ridiculous. ... However, I think it would be embarrassing to have an Anglo name like "Gertrude" or something like that."
i think this make's her ridiculous.
Reply:I think that African Americans should be able to name their children whatever they want to. Why do we have to subscribe to Euro-centric standards in every aspect of our lives?
When white people name their kids no one says their names are too white.
There is nothing wrong with a name that promotes pride in your culture.
As long as its not taken too far.
Reply:Because they go through life trying to prove that they are not a product of their environment and their name is just a constant reminder of it. I am the same way. My name is Taychan. It can be asian or ghetto you decide.
Reply:That is their parents choice. Would you rather have the name Hannah like my daughter who is mixed race. Even my family thought it was too white for a mised race child and I have mixed race cousins.
Reply:What name do you want them to have?
sarah?
bill?
seth?
I think its good that there are successful people with those names because it shatters the negative stereotypes of made up names.
Reply:Condolezza : derived from the Italian musical expression, Con dolcezza, which means "with sweetness.
A name is a name.
Reply:their parents named them that, and the reason people make fun of their names is because their successful and success is open for criticism
Reply:What is even funnier is if a black guy is named Brad
and a black girl is named Britney or Summer
Reply:What are "ghetto" names?
A name is a name is a name.
People will make "fun" of anything, because they have nothing else going for them selves.
Reply:it's only ghetto when put with black people, have those names put on people of different races and there would be no complaints.
Reply:Who the hell are you to say those names are ghetto! is doesn't matter there still powerful!!!!
Reply:condoleezza supposedly came from "con dolcezza," which is an italian musical term meaning to play "with sweetness". her family's educated and they were really into music - started her on the piano when she was 3.
shaquille is arabic for handsome/popular - the root word is shakil.
you already know the deal with oprah's name.
the diamond guy has an arabic name and if you've ever read about how they come up with the names there's very little creativity to it. you're just taking names from ancestors or locations to describe who you are. his mom's a linguistics professor so i'm sure it makes some kind of sense.
the whole lauvaugn thing is pushing it but i googled it and got a bunch of different names that all belonged to old or deceased white women and .
so what i'm trying to say is these names aren't "made up". people make fun of some names and call them ghetto out of pure ignorance. and also because there are plenty of black ppl out there who, in an attempt to kind of stand out or separate themselves, end up giving their kids dumbass names that literally have no meaning or origin whatsoever. ie laquaisha.
hell, i know i thought usher was ghetto for naming his kid naviyd. it's persian for "reward."
