Why are black names considered ghetto?

For example names like Mary or Becky are not considered ghetto because people heard of them all the time. But I find it odd a hollywood actress named her child Apple...............now if she was black and named her child apple would it be considered ghetto?

I was watching this show and this white lady was very upset people judge her based on her name. One of those so called ghetto names and are shocked to see she is white.

This is off topic, but at my job someones ring tone went off and my manager said oh God I am shocked you have such a ghetto ring tone! I was like huh? But it was the other manager who happens to be Irish : / and my manager said no more.

But I think everyday names are boring. People feel they must stay the same and Hollywood is proving everyone wrong. Its 2008 and made up names are just as good.....Mary and all those other past names were made up also.

My friend is white and her name is Kiki and it sounds beachy to me.

So whats everyones problem?

Why are black names considered ghetto?
lol, are you talking about Gwenyth Paltrow?

I think it's just because some names are rare while others are considered the norm because they're more common. I don't see why unique names like Tyrone or Shaquanda are considered ghetto when they're just original. I have a very stereotypical name for those of my race. I would kill to have something original whether it's considered ghetto or weird. As for your manager I have the same problem when my ringtone is R%26amp;B or what most people consider stereotypical black people music. It's just stereotypes in the end. Don't let them get to you, every race has got them and we all know that thet're not all true.
Reply:People tell me the same thing. And it gets annoying sometimes.

My full name is Day'quan Carter and all my life my name was considered ghetto.

I'm not pointing fingers or anything but my guess is that, because black people are always stereotypes as ghetto, and since black people usually come up with unique names, ignorant people tie it right back up with the ghetto. When it has absolutely nothing to do with it.

But I'm not really sure. Good question.

Reply:I call them ethnic names that's much nicer.I saw the show you are talking about and it's another stereotypical. Why people do that to their kids knowing how society is I will never understand. If you were to look at my kids name you would think 2 were European and the other Hispanic. Those were just the names I liked. But unless you have a degree.really Ethnic name cane be a hindrance when it comes to job apps.
Reply:Ick Apple is such a stupid name, I like unique names but sometimes it goes too far like I would never name my child(if I ever had one) Apple or Shayniqua, I also wouldn't name them something that is used a lot like Ashley or Brittany.
Reply:Ok, a name like Shana-na is Ghetto you have to admit. It's ghetto white or black.
Reply:seems like only black people consider them ghetto.
Reply:People who name children with made-up names curse those people with a name they will continually have to spell and explain for others for the rest of their lives. It will likely be misspelled on forms, mail, etc. Some people will never care. Others will curse their parents.

Frankly, made-up names, even stupid names, are not a new thing. The hippies did it and that probably started it in this country. Then blacks started adopting Swahili names as a form of black pride, names that many people couldn't spell or pronounce.

Now lots of people seem to invent baby names with a scrabble board.

Originally names were used to honor deceased family members, continue the maiden name of the mother, carry on tradition, and identify people to a region or their status in society. That is now disappearing. Ancestral identity seems to be a bad thing.

As long as a person understands that the name they have is unusual and accepts the confusion it creates, then go ahead and keep a strange name.
Reply:I don't know why ghetto developed so many meanings. But I think the reason it's conjoined with certain black people is because blacks have embraced that word. Now that ghetto has more meaning than just a low income area, meanings that sort around negative aspects like ignorant character, or ignorant naming(giving people names with no meaning), it's now offensive to blacks.

I didn't know names could be ghetto. I'm guessing many blacks with weird names that mean nothing who come from like ghettos or hoods, that example is now a ghetto way of naming someone. I don't know, just a guess. Some people however have nicknames so it's not as bad as people who are actually named Ethnically challenged names, semi whack names that belong to objects (Peaches, apple) or names with no meaning.
