Why won't Puerto Ricans from the islands except me,and call me names like cafre?(trashy,tacky,/ghetto)?

I'm a third generation Puerto Rican, but most island Puerto Ricans

call me Nuyorican(a Puerto Rican descendant born in New York, especially New York City),which is a mixture of New York and Puerto Rican.I went to Puerto Rico for the first time.Although most island Puerto Ricans are preppy ,generous, kind, family oriented, hard working, religious, most treated me like crap.

They called me all kinds of messed up names like cafre, gringo, mulatto, untrue Puerto Rican. It is true that many Nuyoricans are cafre, but I'm not like that.My grand-parents,great- grandparents, aunts, and uncles came to New York in the forties after world war 2,like most Puerto Ricans. They were Jibaros(country folk people)and they were very traditional. If I were to act like a cafre,my grandparents would kick my a$$,because they wanted me to be Puerto Rican, because they were traditional, and I was not allowed to speak English at home.

The island Puerto Ricans said I lost the spirit of being true Puerto Rican. What should I do?

Why won't Puerto Ricans from the islands except me,and call me names like cafre?(trashy,tacky,/ghetto)?
Girl don't let these people bother you because I'm sure they wouldn't be saying that if somebody up and decided to move them here to America. Anyways you know who you are and you know that you're not a "Cafre" and besides those people are jealous because you're an american. Just take their negative talk as a compliment.

"besides those people are jealous because you're an american"

Reply:Just take it as a compliment because of their jealousy. If it really gets to bother you, then tell them not to call you that, and if that doesn't work, hurt them.
