What constitutes a "ghetto" name?

Names that are branded "ghetto" have been a hot topic lately so I did my research and found that most of the names that people claim to be "ghetto" have Latin, Arabic, or African roots. Yet these names are often ridiculed for "having no meaning" and associated with being "ghetto" and/or stupid.

I was just wondering...what makes a name "ghetto?"

What constitutes a "ghetto" name?
Why don't people criticize and call names like "Bristol", "Trig", "Piper", etc. ghetto? Cause those names surely have no meaning what so ever. If you ask me, I think it's a cultural standard, and those not familiar with the black race must criticize what is unique because it is not of their own. They don't understand it, that's why.
Reply:A lot of ghetto names want to sound African, but they are actually not. It's like they are trying to "Americanize" an African name. There have been a lot of educated people named "ghetto" names, but because of stereotypes they are automatically assumed to be stupid or "ghetto". Although, it would not be a good idea to have your kid be named something "ghetto". It can hurt their job opportunities, because when people see that name on an application, they probably won't hire them.
Reply:I don't think any name is "ghetto," just unique. I think the names that are branded as ghetto are the ones of African origin, but have bastardized spelling.

Oh, I guess you can say naming your kids after household items (know a person who did this!) can be considered be considered "low class" by some people. Meh @ socialization.

Oddly (for me only), I associate Britney with head cases (a la pop star).
Reply:names that are just trrown together, I am a big advocate on not giving your child a name that doesn't sound professional. Do you really want your child to be judge,by a name alone. Many people assocaite ghetto with black people, but tthere are whites who indeed do some ignorant things to their children's names such as stormie, braylynn, chevy. It is not so much getto names it is names that are ignorant and selfish. the parents don't have to live with the name teh children do. Imagine being named Cinquanta, or shaqualla. Those are just two girls I graduated with
Reply:if its like laquisha, larisha, taquanisha, etc. ghetto

edit~~~~ clueless to why they say its ghetto but my friends have some extremes like nashabel, roshanda, naquita, laneira my friends daughters name is anquinese .........? but i do think britney, is a ghetto name for white people lol
Reply:names that are generally unique to people from the ghetto. that seems to be the most logical explanation. yes, most have african roots, but the general public doesn't always know that.
Reply:heh nothing makes them better than any other name, all a name is is a title to give you so they don't have to run after you screaming " hey you!!" all the time, without names there would be quite a lot of "yous" out there don't ya think?
Reply:People say my name is ghetto, I tell them to get lost. It sounds unique and different.

Reply:Stupid is the main thought when I hear Britney. Really though I've heard White people with names out of this world and nobody thinks twice about it, in a way it's a double stardard that needs to be fixed.
Reply:i wish they wouldn't be labeled ghetto. Its a cultural thing. I see baby name books to have names like LaTanya and Tamika in there. There are no meanings but labeled English-African American
Reply:No clue....
