Hey, my name is Celyra and it is pronounced sa-leer-ra and I was told recently that my name was ghetto, when in fact, it means "from heaven' in a south american dialect. I was wondering if you thought it was ghetto.

Reply:Well I never really know what people mean by "ghetto" - I sometimes suggest names form classical Greece and Rome and are told they are "ghetto". When I see children from ghettos on the news, they just have the same sorts of names that people pick for their kids on here - Peyton, Troy, Bella and Zander and so on.





But Celyra is a very pretty name - it is the South American form of Celia.
Reply:I don't know what a ghetto name sounds like. I'm not being disengenous or playing dumb to be politically correct. I once met two white, suburban little girls named Ashanti and Maisha. Those names I would have associated with African American children, so there is one less stereotype for me to follow. Names are given across cultures and economic backgrounds, no name is an "educated" name even if your name is Albert after Albert Einstein or Niels after Niels Bohr. What makes a name is the name bearer.
Reply:I like it. It's interesting and unique (without being weird - like Apple or something). Plus, you know the meaning and the origin - it's not like your parents picked some random word. Whoever told you it was "ghetto" clearly doesn't know anything about anything. I say tell them to shove it!
