Why Do People Call Names "Ghetto" without knowing anything about them?

I was doing an english project and as a class we had to chose 2 names, a place and a quote. The name I chose was Tazia (Tay-shuh) and everyone in my class (they're all white) looked down upon me but we continued and it was accepted. Well I looked it up and it is Greek for Ressurection. Why do people look down on "ghetto" names if they don't even know the origin, background, or history of them?

Why Do People Call Names "Ghetto" without knowing anything about them?
Well some names are made up and thats why I say they are ignorant, not ghetto. Lots of people just make up names and thats messed up. But it is also a reflection of the fact that our peoples language was stolen several hundred years ago. Our first names and family names have been taken. You remember Kunta Kintay had to change his name to Toby. So therefore, the names are ignorant if they are made up (im gonna name me Aquanaytaysia) and cultural if you find that the name has a meaning and a cultural history.
Reply:Because they are ignorant and want to exercise power by deciding which names are culturally acceptable.

Hey, lets look at this thing and call it what it is. First of all, every name is made up. John, Joe, Bessie, Mary and etc.

Some idiot somewhere thought,

"I going to name my son John and John means strong".

Then someone else has a son and says

"I'll name my son, Antwan and Antwan means King".

Then the first person says

"Antwan is not a "real" name it is ghetto".

Its all a bunch of bull-you-know-what.

Its about power, and you must excercise your power of choice my naming your child anything you desire and define it as meaning whatever you want it to mean.

Get what I mean?

Reply:You know how us white people are...we just be racist and ignorant. We talk about it at the meetings and decide what we will criticize. Just so happens that we thought we would crack on the names for a while.

I'll bring it up at the next white folks meeting and see if we can't get that changed. I'm all for it and since we all think exactly alike we will ratify that and suspend the making fun of names. It is always a unanimous vote because we all think just alike all the time.
Reply:...because since we live in America, they think we should all have names like Bob, Mary, Mike etc.

People think since we're all Americans that minorities should not have any culture and they should assimilate to the American way, which basically is code for the White way.

Reply:You answered your own question. They don't KNOW. The bigger problem is that they don't want to know. Racism is synonymous with narrow mindedness. Perhaps we should just pity them for their lack of intelligence.

Reply:A "ghetto" name are names used by black americans that they feel sound African but are just made up.
Reply:cuz if its not an anglo name its "different" seriously alot of "ghetto" names actually have great meanings behind them.
Reply:Its all racist attitudes. I have a white friend named Keisha and she gets hell for it all the time. People can be so dumb sometimes.
Reply:Because people are pathetic, they always have to find something small and petty to start a conflict with.
Reply:everyone in my class (they're all white)

You have answered your own question...
Reply:because people like them are snobs well they think they are rich but they are probably poor
Reply:BECAUSE THEY LIKE TO "ASSUME" MAKE a *** out of U and ME!!!
Reply:People are stupid! Don't let it get you down%26lt;3 I like that name btw. haha
Reply:Could it be, maybe, that you are extremely ghetto and filling the stereotype?

Call the ACLU.

"Walks like a duck..." you know the rest.
Reply:Because you're black, and you have to use a ghetto name. Don't you know all of us blacks are alike, silly? We have to fit into what people think we should be.
Reply:Well, I think we should stop the hate and love all people. ALL

people includes BLACKS and LATINOS. Especially Latinos...

cause there are more to love!:) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cH2ETXDA...
